Discover the Serra de Tramuntana

The Serra de Tramuntana is very well known throughout Spain and internationally, whether that be for its picturesque towns or its stunning mountain peaks such as Puig Major, which during the coldest months is enrobed in a stunning cape of snow.

The famous mountain range was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2011, a title it more than deserves. The Serra de Tramuntana runs for approximately 90km from the south-west to the north of the island. It covers up to 30% of the Balearic island.

Along the mountain range, we can find a number of charming towns and localities that are definitely worth visiting, such as Alaró, Andratx, Santa Maria del Camí or Fornalutx. Calvià and Pollença are among some of the most popular, as are the little dreamy towns such as Valldemossa, Deiá, Sóller and Campanet.

We’ll start the route by exploring the prettiest towns in the Serra de Tramuntana. These are must-sees if you’re visiting Mallorca. We’ll then follow the route down the mountain until we reach Campanet, a rural, authentic Mediterranean jewel. Don’t miss out!

The best towns in the Serra de Tramuntana

Valldemossa and Deià

The towns of Valldemossa and Deià in the Serra de Tramuntana have made it to the top ranking of Spain’s prettiest towns. They’re both stunning and capture the best of the Mallorcan essence in every nook and cranny.

Valldemossa has 1,976 inhabitants and stands out for its hilly streets, flowers which hang from the stone house fronts, its famous Cartuja (where the musician Chopin lived), the port and, of course, its cocas de patata! It’s one of the most famous towns in the Serra de Tramuntana and you definitely won’t have to ask why. Remember that the weekly market takes place on Sundays.

Sóller

If there’s one thing you should know about the Serra de Tramuntana, it’s that a stop in Sóller is a must (and not tasting its delicious oranges is a sin!). It has 13,194 inhabitants, the island’s typical narrow streets and valleys brimming with olive groves, local allotments and of course, splendid orange groves.

You can’t miss out on a visit to the Church of Sant Bartomeu, the Barranc de Biniaraix, the Thursday or Saturday market accompanied by an ice cream while you take a trip on the Sóller train (a landmark that has been operating since 1912).

Campanet

The town of Campanet is widely known for the magnificent Coves de Campanet, a series of caves covering 3200m2 and covered in stalactites and stalagmites that will leave their mark on anyone. If you come to Campanet, this underground natural monument is a must-see, but that’s not all this picturesque spot has to offer.

Campanet looks like something out of a storybook or postcard as the local almond trees, little stone houses or narrow streets make for a unique backdrop that’s worth capturing.

If you decide to visit this stunning town in the Serra de Tramuntana, definitely one of the favourites, don’t forget to visit its famous square, the Iglesia de Sant Miquel and the popular Finca Gabellí Petit, where the Ses Fonts Ufanes are located.
