Planning your island holiday? Learn all about agritourisms in Mallorca.

What is an agroturismo?

Some call it an agroturismo, others agritourism, rural hotel or finca. In Mallorca, (and especially at Monnàber Vell), we like to call it a charming finca full of history. On this Balearic Island and for some time now, many of the traditional village fincas, or farmhouses, have adapted to the present day and have become the notorious agroturismos.

So, what exactly is an agroturismo or "agriturismo"? In short, they’re gorgeous fincas that have been converted into rural hotels with around 10 or 18 rooms, all of which offer a friendly reception. These establishments aim to offer visitors something a little bit different, and in Mallorca, it’s all about offering guests the other, fantastic side to the island.

In Mallorca, you can find everything from a simple and picturesque agroturismo to others which are super traditional and family run, or even rural agritourisms with a spa and the perfect combination of relaxation, luxury and authenticity.

Stay in a rural agroturismo Mallorca

Some go in search of different experiences, travelling and discovering the “true” location. The best way of getting to grips with Mallorca’s traditions, culture, history and even the cuisine is to stay at an agroturismo. We’ll briefly tell you why:

Friendly atmosphere

An agroturismo finca in Mallorca is characterised by its close treatment and friendly atmosphere. You won’t feel different or as if you’re just another tourist, but instead, as if you’re just another part of the Mallorcan family. Even if you choose an agroturismo with the added extra of comfort and “luxury”, it will always maintain this Mallorca character and essence. Feel at home, let yourself be pampered and enjoy your holiday in Mallorca.

Nature

While staying in an agroturismo you’ll always be surrounded by nature, between Mallorca’s mountain peaks and stunning woodland and pine forests. Also, depending on where and during which season you come and stay, you’ll be able to enjoy almond trees in bloom or fruit trees such as orange trees.

Local markets

We’re passionate about Mallorca’s traditional markets. Who isn’t? They’re packed with the best, fresh local produce, from vegetables to flowers, olives, olive oil, cheeses and cured meats such as sobrassada (smoked, often a little spicy, sausage-type spread) or butifarrón (traditional spiced sausage), wines and all types of clothing and footwear. If you want to find out more, take a look at our post about Mallorca’s markets.

Outdoor sports

An agroturismo or rural hotel in Mallorca will allow you to get the best out of the island by enjoying all types of outdoor sports such as cycling (the favourite sport here), hiking, Nordic walking and even golf or water sports just a few minutes away.

Relaxation

Forget about the hustle and bustle of city life. You don’t have to be right in the centre to enjoy Mallorca, that’s for sure. Although Palma is a calm city yet full of life at the same time, there is nothing like the relaxation that awaits you at a Mallorcan finca. If you’re looking for a combination of fun, sports, relaxation, Mallorcan essence and the best cuisine, need we say any more?

The best towns in Palma de Mallorca

Mallorca is a paradise in itself and all its towns have a special something. They’re all special, but some of the towns just can’t be missed and they’re perfect for a stay in an agroturismo during your next holiday.

If you’re thinking about visiting Mallorca and staying at a rural hotel that’s not too far from Palma, we’d recommend you choose one of these beautiful towns: Valdemossa, Sóller or Campanet. If you’re looking for something truly rural, choose the first option, but if you’d rather something that combines a little bit of everything, choose Campanet, without a doubt (here’s a post about what to do in Campanet). If you want to explore some of the island’s best towns, we’d also recommend you read the following post about the towns in the Serra de Tramuntana.

Rural agroturismo in the Serra de Tramuntana

Almost all the rural hotels on the island have their own charm, but our heart always goes for the stunning Serra de Tramuntana. No surprise there! It’s been declared World Heritage by UNESCO, it's simply majestic, and we just couldn’t resist. If you’re looking for an agroturismo surrounded by unbeatable beauty in Mallorca, choose one close to the Serra de Tramuntana (you’ll enjoy some breath-taking views).

A rural hotel and spa

As you’re heading off on a rural escape to Mallorca in search of relaxation and the chance to enjoy the island, stress-free, are you really going to choose an agroturismo without a spa? Take your holiday to the next level and choose a traditional rural finca with a natural spa. You won’t regret it.
